Hagerstown, MD [October 15, 2019] – Hub Labels was honored on Friday, October 11th, by representatives from the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health, a Division of Labor and Industry, for becoming the fourth business in the state of Maryland to receive the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) certification. SHARP is a recognition program for smaller, high-hazard employers who operate exemplary safety and health programs. Steve Lakin, the Deputy Commissioner of Labor and Industry, presented the SHARP certification to Hub Labels President, Thomas Dahbura; original founder, Mary Dahbura; and Quality & Continuous Improvement Director, Jesse Hood.

“The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) division was instrumental in helping Hub Labels achieve the SHARP certification”, stated Thomas Dahbura. “When we reached out to MOSH to start the process of becoming SHARP certified, we found out that there were only three other businesses in the state of Maryland with the certification. We knew it would require a team effort and be a huge undertaking for us. It took us just over two years to become SHARP certified. It really is a testament to the Governor’s mission to balance the private-public relationship. The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health division has been fantastic helping us get through this process. Their team is doing outstanding work and they were key to helping us achieve our goals. We are also grateful to the World Class Consortia as they have been very instrumental to helping Hub Labels learn more about lean manufacturing which has allowed us to become the company we are today.”

The celebration featured remarks by Governor Larry Hogan, who was among the honored guests. “This is an exciting achievement for Hub Labels, Hagerstown, Washington County and the state of Maryland”, declared Governor Hogan. “One of the best things about my job as Governor is seeing homegrown businesses succeed, especially companies that have shown such loyalty to the state of Maryland. Hub Labels is always thinking bigger and pushing harder to better serve their customers. It should come as no surprise that this great family owned, Maryland business, recently became the fourth business in the state of Maryland to pass through the rigorous standards to become SHARP certified. Hub Labels is part of an elite group of small businesses which are recognized for creating a positive work culture, for attracting skilled workers and for developing innovative safety and health programs.”

Other state and local officials were also among the honored guests, including Delegate William J. Wivell, Delegate Neil Parrott and Delegate Mike McKay, as well as Washington County Commissioners Jeffrey Cline and Randall Wagner. Paul Frey, CEO and President of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce was also in attendance.

Thomas Dahbura expressed his gratitude for all his guests, but especially for his parents and their key role in driving the success of the company. “We are truly a Maryland company. My parents, Mary and Bud Dahbura, started this company in 1978. My mom would run the company during the day and dad would work his daytime job at Pangborn, come home to eat dinner, and then print labels in the evening. Family, community and innovation was always valued and encouraged by my parents. That axiom became the heart of Hub Labels.”

Hub Labels, Inc has been at the forefront of advances in the label printing manufacturing sector, having been among the first to adapt the four-color process, computer-to-plate technology, digital printing press, servo-driven presses, linerless labels and many other innovations. Their digital printing press produces a 1200 print resolution with a 7-color extended gamut that achieves the highest quality in the label printing industry. In January 2019, Hub Labels announced that they are G7 and GMI certified which shows their expertise in color matching and print quality. The company also announced in September that they are 100% landfill free, a rarity in the label industry.

Thomas Dahbura is The Label Guru

Meet the Label Guru

Hagerstown, MD | April 23, 2019 — Hub Labels introduces the Label Guru in a fun new video to promote Linerless Labels, an innovative label designed for high volume manufacturing and processing which is ideal for the meat, poultry and seafood industry due to the growing popularity of skin pack trays. Secondary markets include fresh produce, convenience and desserts. Linerless Labels are the perfect solution for any oddly shaped package that proves to be a labeling challenge for traditional pressure sensitive labels. Linerless Labels solve that problem by wrapping around the tray creating a 360° label for brands. This sleeving approach eliminates the separate silicon release liner needed for pressure sensitive labels. This revolutionary label delivers presentation consistency on the shelf, increased surface print area, backside printing, process efficiencies and less manual labor needed on a production line.

Popular for many years in the UK and Europe with over 12 billion+ applied annually, Linerless Labels and Sleeves bring high-end packaging solutions to the table with a variety of application styles. Linerless Labels provide all the benefits of self-adhesive labeling with improved efficiencies, volume applications and environmental advantages through their non-utilization of carrier backing paper. Available in silicone coated paper, board or synthetic materials, standard Linerless Labels deliver a semi-adhesive label format which partially adheres to pack through a series of technically placed glue strips. Labels faces are then supplied without carrier backing paper. Reel weight is therefore significantly reduced by up to 40%, meaning less weight waste, storage and reel changeovers. As an extended pack format, Linerless Labels also delivers consistency on-shelf as well as increased surface area print to better service information and legislative requirements.

Linerless Label Benefits Include

  • Zero backing paper waste
  • 40% less reel weight compared to self-adhesive labels
  • More labels on a reel
  • Fully automated application speeds of up to 180 packs per minute
  • Fewer reel changes, less downtime
  • Consistency of format on-shelf
  • Increased surface print area
  • Tamper evident

Washington County Business "Going Green" Award Winner

2014 Going Green Business Award

Hagerstown, MD | February 26, 2014 — Hub Labels, Inc. received the Going Green Award during the 15th annual Washington County Business Awards at the Hager Hall Conference and Event Center on Wednesday, February 26th, 2014.

Hub Labels is proud to be recognized for the steps they have taken to integrate environmentally friendly operating practices and procedures into their business. This includes efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle throughout the facility, as well as educating employees.

Journey to Going Green

Hub Labels’ journey to “Going Green” began in 2009 when it introduced Linerless Labels to the United States Marketplace. Linerless Labels proved revolutionary in the label industry. It solved a unique problem in the marketplace of how to label a skin pack tray. The environmental benefits of Linerless Labels also proved to be a great win for Hub. As the name suggests, Linerless Labels are a no liner label, which means no waste that ends up in a landfill. This also reduces roll weight of the finished product, which in turn reduces shipping weight and costs. Linerless Labels are designed for high-volume manufacturing and processing line applications for meat, poultry and seafood packs and trays. They can also be an ideal solution for bakery goods, prepared foods or any product where a standard pressure sensitive label cannot be easily applied.

In 2012, Hub Labels became Project L.I.F.E. certified which is a program developed to enable Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, Inc. (TLMI) members to find cost effective ways to help reduce their environmental footprint. As a result of the certification process, Hub Labels created an employee led “Going Green Team” that creates, implements and manages all the corporate environmental projects and efforts. The team has created standard operating procedures within each department that focus on reducing materials and waste to limit what is sent to a landfill. They have also identified best practices to reduce electrical consumption and create energy efficiencies within their standard operating procedures.

Since 2010, all efforts are tracked to measure how much waste has been eliminated, cost savings or added costs and employee engagement. With the tracking system, Hub can report back to employees how they are making a difference.

Environmental Efforts Tracking

Since 2010, all efforts are tracked to measure how much waste has been eliminated, cost savings or added costs and employee engagement. With the tracking system, Hub can report back to employees how they are making a difference. Hub has shown employees the impacts of their efforts.

Environmental Impact Statistics at Hub Labels Include:

  • Recycled materials have equaled 348,663 lbs for 2013.
  • Ink/toner/cell phone recycling began in 2013 through Evolve Recycling, which is zero landfill.
  • Starting in 2012, more than 17,990 lbs of plate material has been diverted from landfill through DuPont TR3 plate recycling.
  • Solid waste based on paper usage was reduced from .493% to .382% from 2010 to 2012, which means more is recycled and less waste is being generated at press reducing materials going to landfill.
  • Electrical consumption went from 80.05 feet per kilowatt hour to 82.10 feet per kilowatt hour, or, overall reduced by 3% in 2012, which means electricity is being used efficiently by being able to get more throughput each kilowatt hour.
  • Water usage from 2010 to 2012 went from .001416201 gallons per foot to .001305688 gallons per foot overall, which means less
water is being used in production. With the implementation of the After Rinse Water Recirculation system in 2012,
14,495.7 gallons of pure water was saved for the year. As of September 2013, 13,348 gallons of pure water has been saved and more than 1,000 bottles of water saved with the implementation of a water bottle filling station on the shop fountain.

The other two finalists for the award included the Habitat for Humanity Restore and Hempen Hill BBQ Bar & Grill. The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County Department of Business Development hosted the event. There were about 152 businesses and people considered for the awards, which were narrowed down to 21 finalists. Over 530 people attended the black-tie optional event. Hub Labels is grateful to be recognized as a sustainability leader within the label industry.

Hub Labels is proud to introduce Linerless Labels to the US Markets

linerless-labelHagerstown, MD | April 15, 2009 — Hub Labels is pleased to introduce Linerless Labels, a labeling solution that eliminates the silicone release liner found on traditional pressure sensitive labels, to the United States marketplace. Linerless Labels are a revolutionary solution to labeling skin pack trays, vacuum sealed meat trays, and other product trays or packages that are traditionally tough to apply a ps label due to their odd shape. Primary markets include the meat, fish and poultry categories. Secondary markets include fresh produce, bakery and dessert food products.

As the name suggests, Linerless Labels eliminate waste by eliminating the liner which is a non-recyclable byproduct of ps labels. To prevent a Linerless Label from sticking to itself while on a roll, a silicone layer is added to the face stock. Sleeving or full-wrap applications are effective at reducing the typical material weight of traditional sleeves while speeding up efficiencies. No label liner means that a Linerless Label roll can hold more labels, reduce freight cost, decrease production downtime and changeovers, and help reduce production line labor costs.

Popular for many years in the UK and Europe with over 12 billion+ applied annually, Hub Labels was able to work with the UK Company, Ravenwood Linerless Labels and Sleeves, to bring this high-end packaging solutions to the table with a variety of application styles. As an extended pack format, Linerless Labels also deliver consistency on-shelf as well as increased surface area print to better service information and legislative requirements.

Linerless Label Benefits Include:

  • Zero backing paper waste
  • 40% less reel weight compared to self-adhesive labels
  • More labels on a reel

  • Fewer reel changes, less downtime
  • Consistency of format on-shelf
